Professor Paul Yu is the Provost of Revelle College and a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Since joining the UCSD faculty in 1983, he has held several institutional leadership roles, including Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Initiatives in the Office of Research Affairs and Interim Dean of the Graduate Division.

Professor Yu’s research focuses on novel electronic and opto-electronic devices, such as optical modulators and photodiodes, as well as advanced semiconductor materials. He is widely recognised in the technical community for his contributions to the advancement of analogue fibre links and high-power devices. His research team at UCSD has set world records in the performance of semiconductor waveguide modulators and detectors, and his work has profoundly impacted the frontiers of optical communications, radar sensing, and microwave and millimetre-wave generation.

As an active leader in his field, Professor Yu served as the President of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Electron Devices Society from 2012 to 2013. He has published more than 170 papers in photonics and electronics and is an elected Fellow of the IEEE, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Optica (formerly the Optical Society of America), and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE). He received his PhD in Applied Physics from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 1983.
