Prof. Harry Shum

Council Chairman, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

Professor Harry Shum is a world-renowned computer scientist and business executive in the field of AI and digital technologies, and has held senior leadership roles spanning research, product development and corporate strategy. With a career at Microsoft spanning nearly 24 years, he was Executive Vice-President of its AI and Research Group until his departure in 2020. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Association for Computing Machinery. He was elected a Foreign Member of the US National Academy of Engineering in 2017 and an International Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK in 2018. Since his appointment as Chairman of the HKUST Council in 2023, he has been instrumental in guiding the HKUST Council in setting the University’s comprehensive strategic direction and providing guidance and support to its management team in successful execution of a range of pivotal initiatives that have significantly bolstered HKUST’s global academic influence and recognition.
